It has been a crazy couple of weeks. I have been through a rollercoaster of emotions, anger, pain, hurt, overwhelmed, anxiety, exhausted, traumatised, you name it and I know I’m not the only one! Many of us in the black community are reliving all the microaggressions and racist experiences that’s happened to us in our minds, including me. ⠀
⠀
The other day, I couldn’t sleep. In fact, I haven’t slept well all week. Who else can relate? I decided to share a personal story of being chased by a racist white gang in front of my school at the age of 13 and the police did nothing to protect me.⠀
⠀
There are countless of other stories but I shared this story to raise awareness because some people are blinded to what is going on right now and has been rampant for centuries because of systematic, institutional, internalised, interpersonal racism. ⠀
Our reality is that black people have experienced racism GLOBALLY. These are our lived experiences. There is so much power in sharing your story. We can not be silenced and we are not afraid to use our voices!⠀
⠀
Time to speak up. Use your voice, amplify black voices and do the work in your homes, your workplaces, institutions, in oppressed systems. I know these discussions will be uncomfortable but they need to be had. ⠀
Educate yourself and acknowledge your racial bias / (un)conscious bias. The learning never stops because knowledge is power! Change needs to happen now. Black lives matter is not a trend!⠀
⠀
What actions will you continually take to ensure black lives matter?⠀
⠀
I would just like to say thank you for those that have supported me. I’ve received numerous dm’s from people who resonated with my story, shared their own stories with me or have said they were feeling the same way. All your feelings are valid. I hear you! Take time to acknowledge them. If you need to, disconnect from social media for your own peace of mind. Recharge so you can come back stronger! ❤️⠀
⠀
Today I want you to take time out for yourself and do the things that bring you joy. Is that a deal? Below are some tips to help you find joy in the midst of chaos.
